Stop. Enough.

This is not a debate. This is a brawl.

We hear floor chants from the Republican National Convention: Fight, fight, fight. What are we fighting for? Why are we fighting? Whom are we fighting?

Even the best and most articulate among us fall prey to ad hominem arguments. There is no reason to ignore the words of old white men because they are old white men. Enough with generational warfare and ageism.

What we need is an ad hominem quid pro qou: I’ll ignore your sex, sexual preferences, age, race, and ethnicity if you’ll ignore mine.
