To regain the spirit of the American experiment, we can look to past years when there was mutual respect among political adversaries. Consider, for example, the classic debates between conservative William F. Buckley and liberal Gore Vidal during the 1968 national conventions of the Republican and Democratic parties. Buckley and Vidal, coming from opposite ends of the political spectrum, challenged each other’s ideas while avoiding personal attacks. The result, as documented in Best of Enemies (2015), was a set of ten interesting and intelligent conversations that informed public opinion.
